Water boiler heating systems (or hydronic systems) have been used in schools, hospitals and rental buildings for decades. You’ve probably seen these in the form of accordion-style radiators or baseboard grills. But boilers have been relatively rare in Canada’s housing market until recently. What’s driving this new interest? Radiant floor heating. The people who install these systems just can’t stop bragging about them.
Unlike forced air furnaces, a radiant floor heating system heats objects like furniture and bodies, much like the sun’s heat. Many people find this type of heating a more even, comfortable, warmth. There are no drafts, and the floors are warm to the touch. On a cold winter day, there’s nothing like having a warm tile or wood floor to wake up to.
No unsightly heat registers or bulky baseboards means furniture can be moved where you want. The even heat from the floor eliminates hot and cold spots, making it ideal for bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms where you spend a lot of time.
With no ducts or radiators to distribute or collect dust, allergy sufferers can breathe easier. And the system’s use of water circulation is virtually inaudible.
Because heat is warmest at the floor, where we want it (rather than the ceiling), there is less heat loss through the walls and ceiling. Also, radiant floor heating tends to be the any easy way to heat different parts of your house – like your kitchen and basement, for example – at different temperatures. You can use your boiler to heat your floors as well as your hot water tank, saving you even more money.
Since radiant heating tends to require a lower operating temperature, you can use a variety of fuels to heat the water, heat pumps, condensing or non-condensing boilers, or solar heat become options – as well conventional oil, gas or electricity sources.
Installing a boiler requires a professional gas-fitter. The added weight on floors and thermal capacities require careful calculation by someone with experience. 4 Seasons has licensed technicians to ensure your system performs optimally and warranties remain valid.
